Richmond Hill Councilman to challenge Senate incumbent

New York City Councilman Eric Ulrich (Republican) of the greater Richmond Hill area announced earlier this week he will run against N.Y. State Senator Joe Addabbo Jr. (Democrat) to represent the 15th Senate District that encompasses Richmond Hill. It is a crucial District that both parties need in order to control the Senate. There are 62 Senate Districts in the N.Y. with the Republicans controlling 32 and the Democrats 30. Addabbo once represented the area in the City Council until he gave it up to run for the State successfully challenging the Republican Seraphin Maltese.

A Guyanese, Albert Baldeo yielded the Democratic nomination to Addabbo after he almost defeated the Republican six years ago.

Addabbo was supported by Guyanese voters to capture the Senate seat that gave the Democrats 32-30 control of the Senate in 2008 until the Republicans recaptured the Senate in 2010.

Ulrich captured the Council seat for the Republicans in 2009 and won re-election in 2010. He feels he can upset Addabbo for the Senate seat to strengthen the Republican’s position in the Senate.

The 15th Senate District has been redrawn to include more conservative neighborhoods and that could give the Ulrich and the Republicans an opportunity to pick up the seat.
